Purpose[ edit ] In the simple case, this can be a relatively simple task as in the internal combustion engine in which the valves always open and close at the same points. This is not the ideal arrangement for a steam engine, though, because greatest power is achieved by keeping the inlet valve open throughout the power stroke thus having full boiler pressure, minus transmission losses, against the piston throughout the stroke while peak efficiency is achieved by only having the inlet valve open for a short time and then letting the steam expand in the cylinder expansive working.
The point at which steam stops being admitted to the cylinder is known as the cutoff , and the optimal position for this varies depending on the work being done and the tradeoff desired between power and efficiency. Steam engines are fitted with regulators throttles in US parlance to vary the restriction on steam flow, but controlling the power via the cutoff setting is generally preferable since it makes for more efficient use of boiler steam.

Early provisions[ edit ] From the late 19th century through the early 20th, blow-by gases from internal combustion were allowed to find their own way out to the atmosphere past seals and gaskets. It was considered normal for oil to be found both inside and outside an engine, and for oil to drip to the ground in small but constant amounts. The latter had also been true for steam engines and steam locomotives in the decades before. Even bearing and valve designs generally made little to no provision for keeping oil or waste gases contained.
Sealed bearings and valve covers were for special applications only. Gaskets and shaft seals were meant to limit loss of oil, but they were usually not expected to entirely prevent it. On internal combustion engines, the hydrocarbon-rich blow-by gases would diffuse through the oil in the seals and gaskets into the atmosphere.
In general, chemical processes are complex, and chemical engineers in industry encounter a variety of chemical process flow diagrams. These pneumatic valves can be operated by air pilot or solenoid pilot with low power consumption 24VDC solenoids. These direction control valves can be surface mounted or din rail mounted with the optional din rail mounting kit.
The V60 Series directional control valves have high flow rates and are available in multiple port sizes. These valves can be used as individual pneumatic valves or can easily be assembled in a 3 valve manifold with one or multiple manifold bases to create a stacking valve bank. All directional control valves in stock have manual overrides, 24VDC solenoids and cable grip connectors with indicator lights, other options can be requested.
The V60 Series directional control valves are spooled valves designed to operate linear motion control components and require air filtration of 50 microns or better. This style unit was used on Fords with “power assisted” steering where hydraulics connected to the steering linkage was used to help turn the car. Over the years it has developed a reputaion for looseness and fluid leakage, but those are not flaws in the design itself but due to age, abuse and neglect. A properly built, adjusted and maintained system will provide many thousands of miles of trouble-free operation.
There are a few things that owners of new reproduction and rebuilt units should be aware of. Knowing these common traits and often made mistakes will help you to better understand the units and how to help them operate efficiently. Many of the parts inside the control valve itself are continuously bathed in power steering fluid, so there is no need for extra lubrication there.
The ball stud area does have a nipple for a grease fitting and can be lubricated as needed. However, the ball stud and bushing moves very little inside the sleeve area so little lubrication is required. What lubricant is installed during the building of the unit is more than enough to last the through the warranty period and beyond.
New units should not require any additional lubrication for 10, miles or so. Since the ball stud area is fairly small, only a small amount of grease is needed to lubricate the pieces. Usually, no more than one or two full pumps from a standard grease gun is all that is needed. One mistake that is often made by people installing new or rebuilt units is the tendancy to over-lubricate the ball stud area.
